INTERVIEW: KLZ Events is one of the many convention organisation in Europe. They brought actors of many TV Shows in Belgium, Italy, Brazil, Germany and in their birth land, Spain. Behind this great machine, there’s a lot of work. You might want to read this before doing it yourself.
The Convention industry is one of the booming market growing in the “fangirling” scene. Based on events like “Comic Con”, some fans took on their own account to create events for their favorite TV-shows. Among them, there’s Adela and Marina, two beautiful girls who created KLZ Events in Spain. They’ve started a few years ago with a Supernatural convention in Barcelona. Now they’re successful in Spain and in Belgium. A pretty great accomplishment when we see what happened to some other organization. I wanted to have their thought on that market and they were happy to share with me.
Oreo No Heels: So you have a lot of conventions on going, so I was wondering how much free time do you have ?
KLZ Events : None at all, a company like this one requires 24/7 of yourself. So, even when you are travelling, you are thinking about the company and answering emails everyday. You simply cannot leave it all alone. It is like a baby that cannot survive without you.
ONH: After the recent Claire Holt, Ian Somerhalder and Daniel Gillies cancellation for Bloody Night Con (The Vampire Diaries and The Originals convention), you’ve handled pretty well with good counter guests (Riley Voekels, Paul Wesley, Joseph Morgan and Charles Michael Davis), how do you handle this things ?
KLZ: One single word, stress. We do not sleep or eat unless we solve the situation, so how we handle this? Giving a 100% of ourselves. We know that without those 100%, things would be very different. Cancellations hurts, even if they are 100% justified. And no just to you all, but us because we are working everyday for a year to make the perfect event.
ONH: How did you deal with the situation that happened at Arc Con (Arrow Convention) with Manu Bennett ? [context: The actor cancelled the convention and went to another without paying KLZ back.]
KLZ: We do not deal with it, we try to keep working to forget that this man and his agent stole us almost 50k, so there’s no way to deal with it to be honest.
ONH: How do you guys feel about people being scared to invest in conventions because of recent cancellations or some organizations being bankrupt ?
KLZ: Worried, but we always try to think that, after 8 years, people will trust in our professionalism and the conventions we make. Our conventions speak for us and that’s more than the new organizations can show to people.
ONH: I feel like you have a good sense of knowing when a convention is going to be viable or not. What are the most important things for you to know that the con is going to happen?
KLZ: There are many, many things we manage before making a new event. The most important one is a project of viability per convention, per year. We could be announcing new conventions everyday but we have common sense to study our projects one by one and then, announce the ones we are sure we can manage, no more. We refuse to make new events to pay other events and those events, to pay other events… that thing NEVER works and that babel tower will fall sooner or later.
