Whilst everyone is obsessed with “The End of The Fucking World” and rating the episodes of “Black Mirrors” last season (which I also did), my personal 2018 favorite show is Grown-ish ! You’re going to have to read this to know why. And if you don’t like to read… I mean there’s some Yara Shahidi content to look forward to.
So yeah, I haven’t been following much of what’s going on Netflix because there’s just too much. But there’s no way I couldn’t follow what’s happening to my favorite millenial of all time, Yara Shahidi. For the little of you who don’t know, “Grown-ish” is a spinoff of the show “Black-ish“. It follows Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) as she heads off to college and life happens to her. And although the synopsis might sounds easy, the TV show is just as clever as its main show.
What I love about “Grown-ish” is how relatable it is for a college student as myself. No matter how many books you read, how many blogs you follow and how many times people will tell you, you’re never ready for what college/adulthood as in store for you. And besides, college forces you to meet people that are so different and yet so much like you, that it becomes a life experience more instructive then the classes you’ll take. “Grown-ish” tackles all those subject amazingly, at least it did for their first 4 episodes.
And of course, I can’t talk about the show without talking about its amazing cast. As I mentioned above, Yara Shahidi is one of my favorites millennial. At only 17, this gorgeous Afro-american/Iranian Queen is… there’s no word to describe how amazing she is. She’s been a strong activist concerning women’s right, black lives and immigrant’s movement. Recently, she had the chance to interview Hillary Clinton. She’s been accepted in Harvard. And she also launched an initiative called “Eighteen x ’18” to invite are fellow new 18 years old to vote for the first time. I don’t know about you but when I was 17, I was being stupid and wondering what I should do to make Justin Timberlake marry me.
Other cast members to look forward to are Beyoncé’s favorite sisters, Chloé and Halle Bailey, also known as CHLOE X HALLE. Not only do they play the funniest characters in the show, but they also sang the theme song of the show, “grown”. Another one of my favorite is in it: the beautiful Francia Raisa. She was recently in the news for being Selena Gomez’ kidney donor. But if her face is that familiar to you, it’s because, at some point in her life, her name was Leti… She liked to party… And when she shook it… the boys said “Aye mamiiii”. (If you don’t get the reference, I suggest you watch “Bring it on 3” …for your culture.)
“Grown-ish” airs every Wednesday on Freeform in the US. (Europeans, I know…) If you really want to have a good time, just watch it. Trust me.
